A) Lens: Tokyo

I've heard this place is the world's largest metropolis, and being here makes you feel as if the city is infinite.

Tokyo is unique because the booming cultural activity isn't limited to a single identifiable hub,

even the suburbs are lit.

So, as I discover these places for myself I've decided to document what I find. Stop one, Shimo-kitazawa...a.k.a, "Tokyo-Bohemia."

Shimo-kitazawa in the summer is hot, stylishly-humid and undeniably fun.

At night the streets invite locals and tourists to play with restaurants and bars just beginning to heat up after work. Nothing here closes early...well, except the metro.

12.00am seems kind of early for train services to end in a big city, but I guess here everyone has a curfew to abide by, besides it's kind of fun trying out the "sardine squish" on the last train ride home, a mundane yet quintessential Tokyo experience to try once you're here.

Nights in Shimo-Kitazawa, a bohemian 'hood in Tokyo known for thrifting and alternative cafes and bars

At night, summer festivals usually spill out onto the tiny streets and there's bound to be at least one karaoke performance going on. Definitely loud and (I think) out of tune, but still a lot of fun to clap along with!

Shimo-kitazawa for style

Central Tokyo is well know for its street style, and Shimo-Kitazawa is no different.

On the weekends there's much more of a younger crowd popping out, and their love for 90s Americana is at its peak here. A step into one of the many thrift stores is literally a scene from a 90s teen drama:  Nirvana tees on the wall, Beavis and Butt-head playing on analogue TV screens and garage rock blaring out of huge sub-woofers.

It's cool though.

And hard to imagine that a comparatively small neighbourhood frequently hosts so many stylish people at once!
